Death's Door Review friv game - Another Indie Masterpiece

If you see Friv2Online in publishers, then with a high probability you have in front of you, if not a masterpiece in the field of indie, then at least a good game that will leave a pleasant impression. The adventure RPG Death's Door did not escape this fate - this friv game was an unexpected and pleasant discovery for me, and I have no doubt that it will receive its own by the end of 2021.

Behind Death's Door is a small studio called Acid Nerve, which has only one project, the atmospheric pixel adventure Titan Souls, which focuses on interesting boss battles.

A little experience did not stop the developers from jumping above their heads and presenting the world with Death's Door - another adventure game with an isometric perspective that has an original storyline. The main character is a silent raven who works as a reaper in the Bureau of Death and makes a living by taking the souls of the dead.

The gray colors of the starting location hint at the fact that the hero's job is routine and boring. This is also evidenced by the details of the environment - other crows are scribbling something on typewriters and omitting depressive phrases.

But the next task for our raven turns his view of the world upside down - the soul that he must take was stolen by a mysterious thief who hid in the regions beyond the control of the hero's boss. To find the villain, you need to collect three titanic souls of creatures that have long been swallowed up by greed and darkness.

Death's Door meets us with such an interesting plot, and it is not a background one - on the contrary, the scriptwriters tried and presented a story in which there is a place for both humor and serious topics.

Along the way, we meet original characters (what is the Bowler hat worth - a guy with a bowler hat instead of a head) with their own stories (which will resonate in the future), find out the truth about the Bureau and slowly but surely move towards a denouement from which you don’t know what expect. The hero himself does not utter a word.

The gameplay of Death's Door will take us through extensive connected locations, which can be roughly divided into a hub and three worlds characterized by their bosses. For example, one of them is the possessions of the Ceramic Witch, whose servants are revived jugs, creatures with teapots on their heads, and other enemies. They did a great job on the locations - the worlds are interesting to explore, and the well-chosen isometric perspective allows you to see the efforts of the designers.

Another strength of Death's Door is the abundance of secrets and metroidvania elements that make you rush from one corner to another in search of souls (the main friv game resource) and secrets. Spatial puzzles will make the game world line up in your head as a whole, and the relics you find will become the key to puzzles. It can be seen that the authors of Death's Door hid a lot of secrets in their game, and it's quite easy to miss them.

According to the canons of Metroidvania, some areas are closed at the start - in order to get into them, you will need to open new abilities. Here the game shows itself as a solid RPG - we clean up locations in the world, upgrade the hero's skills for earned souls, and also fight bosses and get new magical abilities that will open previously inaccessible territories.

The fights turned out to be action-packed, fast and difficult for two reasons. The first is the emphasis on precise control of the hero, the selection of attack timings and frequent dodges. In the hero's arsenal, by the way, there is a place for various weapons, ranging from an umbrella to a massive hammer (they can also be missed, like dozens of secrets). The second is somewhat uncomfortable keyboard controls, clearly focused on playing with a gamepad.

The combat mechanics are quite simple and do not pretend to be anything fancy. I used the light attack throughout the friv game, forgetting about the heavy one, but the starting sword remained a thunderstorm for my enemies, since other weapons were not to my liking.

I note that there is a grind in the friv game, but not mandatory - the souls necessary for full pumping are calmly collected during the passage of the plot, but those who want to get stronger quickly will be able to return to previous locations and farm souls.

During the passage, I was surprised by the small details that I really appreciate in games. For example, when we fight with the servants of the Ceramic Witch, then with each blow their armor breaks into fragments. The bosses do not have a health bar, but their changing appearance will make it clear how much they have left to live.

Some puzzles need to be creative and not be afraid to do what comes to mind - for example, in one location there is a chandelier on which a bonus is hidden. To get it, you need to climb into the attic and simply cut the chain - and the chandelier will fall. I was also impressed by the room, in which at first glance there is nothing, but it is worth peering into the reflections on the floor... Such features are often lacking in modern games.

The visual is above all praise - no comments are needed here, just look at the screenshots. But I just can’t help but notice the music – a charming soundtrack contributes to a deep immersion in a fairy tale story, and the music subsides when nothing portends trouble, and intrigues when something is about to happen.

This adventure will take you 10-15 hours to complete the story, and another ten hours if you wish to find all the secrets.

Death's Door is good in everything - from an unusual plot to the smallest details, which indicate that the authors have made titanic efforts and responsibly approached the development. Definitely one of the masterpieces in the indie category, which will be appreciated by those who rarely encounter this genre.
